Christmas Preparations

On the previous Sunday (December 6th), we celebrated the Independence Day of Finland. For me that day is always pretty similar as mom and I have created a tradition of baking Christmas cookies & tarts and watching the President's Independence Day Reception on TV. It's also traditional to light up two blue&white candles exactly at 6 pm.

Baking Christmas cookies.

My Christmas tarts look a bit different this year.

I have been preparing for Christmas and getting myself on a great Christmas mood by:

1. Making some Christmas cards

2. Admiring a house that is famous for its Christmas lights (in Janakkala, Finland)

3. Staying fond of Christmas lights and other decorations

4. Being optimistic about getting snow for the Christmas Eve

This pic was taken before the snow melted away in November

5. Listening to a Christmas Radio Channel, which can be found by clicking:

Have great Christmas preparations!!

Vappu 2015

HAPPY (belated) MAY DAY EVERYONE!

It's May already, which means we celebrated Vappu in Finland yesterday, on the May 1st. I know it's known as Worker's Day or May Day in another parts of the world, but for the Finns it's VAPPU.

I didn't do anything special for it, though. I wrote some letters and watched TV, as well as went on a walk. Of course, I drank lots of SIMA and ate some donuts. haha.

You can already see many spring flowers blossoming. So pretty!

Before Christmas

So much time has passed since I last updated this blog. I haven't had any mood for writing any blog posts, because I've been in Finland and when being in Greece I spend so much time in front of a computer screen.

About two weeks ago I arrived to Finland through Istanbul. I flew with Turkish Airlines, and it became my favourite airlines. The service was great, the food was good and I was able to watch a movie of my choice. When the plane was finally in Finland, I was happy. Nothing beats the feeling of being at home!

It snowed on 13th :)

The first days of being at home I spent decorating our home for Christmas, because my mom had done basically nothing - oh well, she had changed the curtains. haha. I also baked some ginger breads and other bakeries for Christmas. Of course, I also had to make some Christmas cards for relatives.

I spent lots of time meeting the people that mean the most to me. After arriving to Finland I have had more people to talk with face-to-face, so I haven't felt the need to chat on FB or other social media so much; not that there would have been many people sending msgs to me. It's kinda funny how I received so much more msgs when I was in Greece compared to the situation now. However, I'm thankful for the people, who chatted with me back in October & November.

I spent some days with my dad at his place and also met my grandma twice. It was great to spend time with all of them. On 21st we all went to granny's place for Xmas dinner, which was great. Before it mom and I went singing Christmas carols at the church, which I hadn't done for the past few years.

I managed to write a few letters and take some pics as well, but most of the time I've been excited for Christmas. It's my favourite celebration, so I'm happy! I hope you are having fantastic holidays, too, no matter if you celebrate Christmas or not!

Independence Day of Finland

Today (Dec. 6th) is Finland's Independence Day! It's amazing (or not) how quickly a year has passed by. I remember the previous Independence Day very clearly, maybe because I usually spend the day the same way every year. :)

This year I can't spend it the same way as before due to me being in Greece. I thought of still mentioning some things that I would normally do. First of all it's national holiday, so I wouldn't need to go to school, though this year it's a Saturday. I would spend a quite long time eating breakfast with my mom and maybe going on a walk or something. The house would be full of Christmas lights, only exception being the lights that belong to a Christmas tree. At some point we would bake Christmas cookies using the same recipe as every year while listening to Christmas songs.

In the evening we would light up two white & blue candles and watch the Presidential Independence Day reception on TV.

This day is usually very lovely and relaxing! :) Here's the recipe for the cookies. I know I shared it a year ago already, but maybe there's someone new, who hasn't seen it yet. Can't wait to bake them later this month!

CHRISTMAS COOKIES; MY GRANDMA'S STYLE

Ingredients:
- 100 g (=3/4 dl) syrup
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoons ginger
- 1.5 teaspoons clove-carnation
- 2 teaspoons cell of pomerans

- 200 g (=2.25 dl) sugar

- 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
- 400 g (=6 dl) wheat flour

Instructions:
- Boil syrup with spices and cool down until it's still warm.
- Foam sugar and butter/margarine.
- Combine mixtures. Add egg. Mix together.
- Add flour and baking soda. Mix again.
- Keep in the fridge at least over night.
- Make cookies and bake in the oven for about 10 mins. About 200 °C.
- Enjoy! :)

What Do I Miss?

There are many things, which I miss, and that's what this post is all about. There are a few things, which I didn't think of missing before coming here, and some things I knew already when thinking of applying for an exchange. However, my aim is not to list down every single thing that I miss. heh.

Home:

I miss being at home, and not needing to worry so much about grocery shopping, laundry, washing dishes, cooking, etc. I mean I don't mind doing these things, as it's called living, but I'd prefer doing them with someone. Besides, home is always home!!

I miss the possibility of drinking the water that comes from the tap, as it's rather annoying to carry drinking water from a store. Another thing related to water is taking a shower - I can't wait to get to a shower, where the water temperature doesn't change all the time from freezing cold to extremely hot! As a Finn, I miss taking a sauna! I miss the relaxing atmosphere in a sauna and the relaxed feeling afterwards.

Naturally, I miss my room, which I just renovated before moving to Greece. As a snail mail addict I miss coming home and going straight to the mail box to see if I got any mail today - now I don't even have a mail box.

It's annoying not to be putting Christmas lights all over our home at the moment and trying new Christmas recipes! I miss having an oven and proper kitchen equipment! Here I don't have an oven, nor a microwave, and to top this all I don't even have a pot for cooking.

What else, oh yeah, I hate having shoes on inside and the fact that my bathroom ain't connected to my studio apartment. At home I don't need to walk on public halls after taking a shower!

Finland:

What first comes to mind is everything being well-organized as in Greece everything feels so not organized! I miss not having people everywhere, empty buses, empty streets and the nature. What also annoys me is the timing, as the timing issue doesn't seem to be very strict here.

I miss the weather! I mean the weather in Greece is alright, in October it was very warm and now it has been rather gloomy and not cold, but not warm either. I just like cold autumn mornings, when the temperature is just under zero. I'm also waiting for snow, so I hope it snows a lot during the Christmas vacation, when I will be in Finland.

The darkness of the fall is somewhat nice in Finland as well. It's perfect for lighting candles and putting Christmas lights inside and outside.

I also miss cheaper milk products! All yogurts, milks, cheeses and such are expensive here, and I like drinking milk with every meal and I also put quite much milk in coffee. Well, I do miss Finnish coffee as well, not that I would particularly like the flavour, but still.

The air is fresh in Thessaloniki as well, but here you can see much many smokers as it's so crowded everywhere. So I miss emptier streets, where I can walk without people smoking around me. In Finland I can pass a person who smokes while holding my breath, but here it's not possible.

People:

Mainly I miss my family, people that are close to me!

I miss waiting for mom to come home from work, and then drinking coffee together. This same applies for weekend mornings; waking up and having breakfast together. I also miss some crazy things that we do, digging birch roots from our back yard, for example. hehe.

I miss going to granny's place for lunch. I used to go there once or twice a week before coming to Greece, so not seeing her for months is rather difficult. She is one of the most important people in my life! When going back to Finland, I will surely go see her straight away.

I do miss the relaxing evenings at my dad's place, going jogging with him and then perhaps watching some TV while having a fire in the fireplace. Luckily, my dad is coming here for a visit soon! I do miss my brother as well, not that we would talk a lot!

To sum up, I miss many things! However, I believe living abroad teaches me to appreciate these things more when going back to Finland. Soon I will be in Finland for Christmas, which will be amazing! :)
